Mridanga class #7 – Combined bols
The hand exercise KA TA KA TI is a fundamental practice for developing dexterity, control, and coordination on the mridanga. Each syllable corresponds to a specific hand stroke—ka and ti are usually played with the left hand, while ta and ka (in the second instance) are played with the right, or vice versa depending on the style. This alternation trains both hands to work in rhythmic balance, helping the player achieve smooth transitions and precision in timing. Practising this pattern slowly and steadily builds muscle memory, and when increased in speed, it becomes a powerful tool for mastering complex rhythmic passages and enhancing overall fluency on the drum.
