Mridanga class #9 – te re khe ta
“te re khe ta” is a foundational hand exercise in the traditional practice of mridanga or mridangam, used in both devotional and classical Indian music. More than just a rhythmic pattern, it develops control, speed, and tonal clarity. Each syllable represents a specific hand movement, and regular practice builds the precision needed for complex rhythms.
Starting slowly and increasing speed over time builds stamina and coordination—essential for navigating intricate tala (rhythmic cycles). It’s a core part of daily practice for both beginners and advanced players, often used as a warm-up.
Beyond technique, “te re khe ta” introduces the vocal aspect of rhythm (solkattu), a key part of Indian percussion training. Saying the syllables while playing helps internalise rhythm and strengthens the link between mind, voice, and hands.
