Sanskrit Chanting Workshop & Kirtan Jam – Balbriggan

Join us for an evening of Sanskrit chanting and heartfelt spiritual music. This event has two parts: a practical mantra chanting session followed by a group kirtan jam (call-and-response chanting with live instruments). No previous experience is needed — just an open mind and heart.
7:00 pm to 8.00 pm: Sanskrit Chanting Workshop
During the workshop, you’ll learn the basics of Sanskrit pronunciation and how to chant mantras with confidence. You’ll be guided through key Sanskrit sounds and simple techniques for effective chanting, including pace, rhythm, and pitch. We’ll introduce a carefully chosen set of traditional mantras and explain what they mean, how they can be used and why they have been cherished for generations. To help you continue at home, you’ll also be given handouts with all the chants included, so you can practise in your own time.
The mantras such as the Gayarti Mantra are taught in the workshop because they relate to the kinds of outcomes people often seek on their spiritual path. In particular, participants will learn mantras commonly used to support:
- Abundance in material and spiritual life
- Peace and well-being in the home
- Overcoming challenges in life
Chanting is simple, but it can be deeply transformative. The combination of sound, rhythm, and focused attention can help quiet mental noise and soften stress, while reconnecting you to a sense of inner stillness and devotion. People often complete the workshop feeling calmer, more centred, and carrying a renewed appreciation for the quiet power of sacred mantra.
8:00 pm to 9.00 pm: Kirtan Jam
The second half of the event is a Kirtan Jam, where we chant mantras together with live music. Instruments such as the harmonium, drums, and cymbals create a steady rhythm, and the session follows a call-and-response format, so you can join in without needing to know the words in advance. It’s participatory rather than performative, and you’re welcome to chant along as much as you like.
This part of the evening is also interactive: the music facilitator will invite participants to try simple percussion instruments during the kirtan, with guidance on keeping time and following the flow of the chants. You can take part on instruments, chant, or simply listen at any point — the aim is to create a shared, supportive atmosphere through mantra, melody and rhythm.
